Apple chose Google's Gemini over OpenAI to power the next-generation Siri. We break down the multi-year deal, the ~$1B/year figure, and what it means for the AI landscape.

Apple and Google AI partnership

Apple + Google Gemini: The Siri Upgrade

Apple has signed a multi-year deal to use Google's Gemini models to power a revamped Siri. After evaluating multiple options, Apple stated that Google's AI provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models.

The Deal in Numbers

  • About $1lion per year from Apple to Google for Gemini and cloud tech. Apple Intelligence still runs on device and via Private Cloud Compute, keeping Apple's privacy stance. The enhanced Siri will be more personalized and able to take actions on the user's behalf with better context. The upgrade is expected with iOS 26 (after a delay from the original iOS 18plan).

Gemini3and the Code Red

Google launched Gemini 3 in November 2025 its most capable model to date. It reportedly prompted OpenAI's Sam Altman to declare an internal code red to accelerate development. The Apple–Google deal gives Gemini access to Apple's 2illion+ active devices—a huge distribution win for Google.

Takeaways

OpenAI remains in the picture (e.g. ChatGPT integration), but Gemini is now at the center of Apple's on-device and cloud AI strategy. For users, it means a smarter Siri; for the industry, it shows that distribution and partnerships are as important as raw model performance.
